Puzzle Hex replaces the familiar square grid with a honeycomb of hexagonal cells, and that single change rewrites every assumption you bring from other puzzle games. Each hex has six neighbors instead of four, which means matches can form along three axes — horizontal, diagonal-up, and diagonal-down — and a single cell can participate in three simultaneous matches. The learning curve is steeper than square-grid puzzlers, but the strategic ceiling is dramatically higher once the geometry clicks.
When you tap Play Now and load the first level, you will see a board of colored hexes and a small "swap" cursor. Tap any hex, then tap an adjacent hex to swap their colors. When three or more same-colored hexes connect in a straight line along any of the three axes, they clear and the hexes above slide down to fill the gap. The goal is to clear a target number of hexes before you run out of moves.
Your opening checklist
- Learn the three axes: Horizontal, diagonal-up-left to down-right, and diagonal-up-right to down-left. Matches only form along these three lines.
- Scan all six neighbors: Before swapping, check every adjacent hex — the right move is often the one you almost missed.
- Count the move budget: Each level has a fixed move limit. Calculate how many clears you need per move and pace yourself.
- Ignore diagonals that are not axes: Not every diagonal is a valid match line. Only the three true axes count — learn to spot them instantly.
The first five levels are gentle introductions with generous move budgets. Resist the urge to clear the first match you see. Instead, practice identifying which swap creates the largest single clear. The swapped hex sits at the intersection, so it is removed once and the bonus applies to the combined clear size. Cross matches are the highest-scoring single-swap moves in the game.
